Looking for ways to elevate your style? Good news, it doesn’t take tons of time and an endless clothing budget to do it. In the end, it comes down to the details. Here are 7 ways to elevate and class up your style in no time as well as the things you may be doing that are bringing it down!
Ways to Elevate Your Style
It is not my intention to offend anyone with this list. These are my personal opinions and it doesn’t mean everyone has to agree. Fashion “rules” are changing all the time, and at the end of the day, wear what you feel most confident in and what works for you! That’s what truly matters. 🙂
1. No exposed bra straps
Personally, I think exposed bra straps look a little tacky. Especially when it looks like you’re trying to “hide” them with nude or clear straps. That does not make it invisible! Furthermore, going for a bright red bra under a racerback tank does not say chic.
There’s no reason to have exposed bra straps when there are a ton of different bra options these days. Strapless, convertible, one shoulder, etc. You name it! These can all work with different outfits to help create an elevated look.
On the flip side, I have seen “pretty” bra straps exposed and I think it works as long as it looks like it was done on purpose.
Instead…bralettes, sheer/lacy bra straps

2. Consider swapping out your tanktops as layering pieces
I certainly have nothing against tanktops. They definitely have their place as a basic piece in your wardrobe and can look casual-cool when worn by themselves in summer. If you’re looking to elevate an outfit, however, try upgrading your basic tank top that’s used as a layering piece and try a nice lace cami or silk/satin one instead! The luxe material and added lace detail make all the difference.
3. Retire your flip flops
There are so many shoe options out there, especially when you want something comfy and easy to put on. I really don’t think cheap flip flops need to be in your wardrobe unless you’re slipping something on to go take out the trash or you’re taking a shower in a dorm room.
Instead…upgrade your flip flops to a nice leather (or leather looking) slide. Just as easy to put on and one thousand times classier.
4. No socks with sandals
Socks with sandals are something you’d maybe see in high fashion magazines or people that just got done playing sports, but I don’t think it translates well to a chic everyday look. Personally, I think socks with heels look kind of runway chic, but I know many will disagree with me.
Instead...socks with loafers, socks with tennis shoes, and socks with heels (if you feel like taking a risk) 😉

5. No bandage bodycon dresses
Are you auditioning for Jersey Shore? Hitting the clubs? No? Then you really don’t need a bandage bodycon dress in your closet. There are other ways to look chic and elevated while also highlighting your body’s best features.
Instead… A form-fitting dress that picks one body piece to highlight. You don’t want something short, tight, and low all at the same time. Low v neck? Opt for length and/or long sleeves. Mini dress? Look for one with a higher neck and/or sleeves. Super tight? Close to knee length may be best. Generally, darker colors read as chic while brighter colors can come off as more “party girl”.
6. Don’t buy platform heels (or toss them out if you have them)
I love a little bit of height as much as the next girl. Not to mention certain heels can seriously elevate your look. However, platform heels don’t exactly scream chic and elevated. Now not all platform heels are “bad”. These are cute and boho chic. I’m talking more specifically about the ones with extreme thickness and height (pictured below). That being said, there are some better heels options out there that will elevate your look.
Instead…stilettos, pumps, etc. Something streamlined and preferably with a pointy toe.
7. Keep your Uggs as slippers only
I know many people will agree to disagree with me here and that’s okay! That being said, I’ve personally never been able to get behind the Ugg train. Frankly, they’re shapeless and they look like you forgot you were wearing your slippers while you went to the grocery store. They don’t add to your outfit at all and instead, they take away from it. To be fair, Ugg has some boot styles out that I think are pretty cute (like this one and this one). I bet the standard uggs are comfy but there are more elevated ways to have a cute outfit in fall & winter.
Instead…boots that have a heel and/or some sort of shape to it
Next up: How to Always Look Timeless
Great !!
Thanks, Carolyn!
To the busty girls out there and myself being one in regards to NO bra straps showing is very tacky . Strapless bras are very uncomfortable and definitely doesn’t give us the support we need I’ve come up with a way to wear my favorite bra . I tack a thin piece of lace to my bra straps , they appear to be bralettes but only I know what’s actually under my top. I have the support I need from my favorite bra without being considered tacky. Improvise ladies . Have a great day
Terry, what a fantastic solution!
I have some clear stretchy bra straps with little rhinestones running along them. When you swap them out for regular straps on a top that shows all you see is a line of tiny rhinestones on your shoulders!
No pointed toe heels. If you want bunions, blisters , nerve pain and hammertoes.
That’s a good idea. They also have decorative bra straps that you can swap out for your plain ones. Many look like jewelry. There’s also lace and embroidered ones too.
WOW! Life hack!!! Looooooove this
I was an elementary principal of a staff of 60- mostly women – for many years- the appropriate dressing rules I had made me realize how many women just don’t have fashion sense! I was strict on no flip flops, no jeans except Fridays and no jeans with holes! Also, no cold shoulder or low cut tops, no short skirts or too tight anything! With young teachers it was a constant battle, but I’m glad I held the line- professionalism is a lost art it seems!
Oh the Ugg thing.
I Love them! I am coming around the corner to 50 this yr. Plainly I can pretty much only wear UGGs.
Why?
I live in Illinois, winter is a cold one and another I just had ankle fusion surgery.
My heels are.forever gone.
So I will wear UGGs.. 😊 sorry no heels.
The long boots nope I’m a bigger gal and my leg won’t let me do that type.
I am large breasted…curious to know what brand of bra you wear? I prefer no wires.
Soma has a great wireless in 38G and a great front clasp bra in the same size. I’ve never been disappointed by their bras.
The Evelyn bra by Evelyn & Bobbie is fabulous! Very supportive, with wide straps and a broad back – no hook, or underwires!
You forgot to mention Crocs! Yuck, yuck, ycuk.
I for one love my crocs & wear them to my Pilates classes & to the grocery store, for a massage, etc.
Love your ideas! Not an Ugg fan,bra straps sticking out just looks plain tacky untidy! Love the cami idea..nice lacy…thanks
Please put hair bonnets in public on your list!!!
On clothing styles for 68yr old slightly overweight retired aged care nuŕse. l Don,t like dresses but l love high waist wide leg pants.l love belts scarves and boots and jackets but Don,t feel able to put it all together
I’m 65 and I live in a pair of jeans and a nice top, lacy, sleeveless , solid color( always) and that has been since my teenage years . If I’m going out I wear it with a nice jacket and pretty shoes or high heels. Anything else makes me feel like I’m in a costume
That sounds like a tried and true wardrobe combination for you. I’m glad you have something you like!
These are great. Except I live where the temps swing from 100 degrees to -50 below Zero!!! Those little boots are going to keep your feet from freezing.
Yeah let’s all dress alike!
Ikr some of the recommended are a bit silly. Knee length nylons, yeah no!!! Socks with sandals, yeah no!!!
Some of us have medical issues where we cannot wear heels & need extra comfort and warmth. I have fibromyalgia with neuropathy and a 3 time cancer survivor who’s body does the best it can with fashion. and regular Uggs are a lifesaver. I’m personally tired of fashion writers acting like those of us with illnesses, but still want to be stylish, write us off because our medical issues. Uggs are not always tacky. You have some good suggestions here though but please keep us in mind who are I’ll/have pain/ temp issues.
Good advice.
MK: Not as much pain as the animal they skin alive so you can have your UGGS.
So I assume you’re vegan? Because if not that’s a silly statement my friend—
The sheepskin used in UGG products come from farmers who raise sheep primarily for food.
The cycle works like this: the meat industry purchases animals from a farmer, the tanneries purchase hides directly from the meat processing facilities, and Ugg’s buy directly from those tanneries.
No harm, no foul. Just people using ALL of the animals products for a purpose instead of it just going to waste 🙂
Firstly, most “Uggs” you see around now are knock-offs and faux suede, and secondly, the animals are never, and have never been, skinned alive. They are good and dead when they are skinned and don’t feel a thing. Don’t be so dramatic.
Is there really ever a reason for bra straps to show? It looks tacky and cheap. I would love someone to honestly show what’s flattering for different body types. Even if you’re slim and trim some things just don’t look right on certain women. Height, bust size, hip size, among other things, should be taken into consideration. Even a skinny woman would look odd if she had a short neck and tried to wear turtleneck sweaters. Short waisted women should wear empire style or drop waist styles and avoid a belted waist. Just some basic advice that used to be normal.
What brand of jeans u wear.
These are all great but I dont see options for chubby pepole like me 😣
Seriously? Are you saying these suggestions aren’t weight inclusive….as if you have to wear flip-flops and Uggs, show your bra straps and cat wear a non-skimpy dress because you’re chubby? Stop it’s pathetic
It can be frustrating can’t it?! What’s your preferred style?
First you say don’t show your bra straps and then go on to suggest swapping a “tank-top” or vest top in the UK, for a lacy cami top. Firstly lace isn’t everyone’s style but more importantly a cami top will expose bra straps. Your no strap showing bra options are fine unless you are overly blessed in the chest area. In the summer time showing a hint of bra strap is often unavoidable.
Don’t wear makeup that is a different color then anything else your wearing it makes you look like a clown or colorblind
@Mimi I wish no one called other people’s posts pathetic. Especially in response to a post that hurt no one and was meant sincerely. I think Athalia_18 probably just wanted more suggestions for how to dress sharp, given the challenges of being a plus size in our society. I’ve gained some weight myself and would also be interested.
What a sweet response Bailey! I’m fluffy myself. What styles do you like? I love feminine things, that have a little shaping without being snug. Empire styles can work well tops that flare to make room for wider hips, and tops that aren’t short, are more flattering. I personally don’t wear short skirts or shorts. Capris are more flattering, or mid calf dresses and skirts. They’re also more comfortable. I’m 67, but don’t dress like a grandma so I’m not suggesting that either.
There is NO WAY I’m getting rid of my flip flops I have a pair of every color!
If you love them then I do hope you keep them. 🙂
Loved your article. I totally agree.
I agree with these but the bra straps are an issue for big chested women! Strapless bras hurt and leaves marks on my body. Any advice for that?
Good helpful advice.
Only, it is not proper for any undergarments to be worn or seen in public and that even goes for Lacey bras. Let’s go back to being a lady and one who Carrie’s herself with respect.
How about wearing a top with wider straps?
So saf that women continue to be pushed about every year- this season that season -about what to spend our money on! Ugh makes me want to put my money in my savings and keep wearing my uggs!!!
I can’t wear those kind of heels
I agree with everything she brought up I’m older so even the things she suggested will complement my style.
I’ll NEVER retire my UGGs.
Amen!!
Good list except for the Uggs. Love mine!
I’ll wear bra straps with my tanks for as long as I choose, thanks.
Who are you to be the fashion Police? Get a new hobby.
This may be the best fashion article I’ve ever read. You were spot on on every single item. Thank you thank you thank you!
I’m so glad you like this!
Amazing tips, and thanks for the excellent pics to demonstrate your points!
Love all your suggestions!
Thank you!!!!!! I thought I was the only one that doesn’t like Uggs.
You’re definitely not the only one! 😉
The bra strap thing is interesting. All the women you chose to display are flat chested I could never keep these triple D’s up with a bralette. All other not looks are women with curves. Boots with heels in winter no thanks. Clearly written by a tiny white chick.
This article gives great points to ponder. Consider this point: I’m 5′ 11″, over 200lbs, and not white. I agree bra straps should not show. I wear something on my arms and shoulders to cover bra straps in summer. I even pin my straps to the shirt so they do NOT creep out. I plan my look and it does not include tacky. Uggs do not have any support for your foot and very little traction. No, high heels in the winter, wear a hiking-style boot for warmth and traction. It is much sexier.
Life is good. There is more than one way to do anything – just think about it.
RACISM
I completely agree!
Sorry Diane, I completely agree with you, not some of other comments that followed yours. ☺️
Hi Diane. You have the right of it. Too many woman follow the teen scene and that isn’t age appropriate nor helpful in looking polished. You don’t need a lot of money either to look finished. Flat heeled shoes and boots will always be in style, form fitting dresses are the best for any type of body shape( much nicer silhouette) belts can be used as an accessory not holding up pants think bling girls bras are meant for your eyes only and Aldo those god awful string undies
That’s my take on this and I’ve done cowboy style(I ride horses) to ballroom dance competitions . I’m 68 and fluffy too
Truth! Who would wear a Ugg for support lol? There’s probably more support in a sock. A fur lined hiking boot is always the better option. Uggs look lazy and make everyone look like they have kankles. Cheap flip flops are awful too. Pretty sure the angry comments are from people that do all of these lol. I live in Florida so I am surrounded by the lazy, unfashionable, and angry. 🙄😂
I would stick with no bra straps showing, period. Even the nice ones are tacky.
You’re joking, right?
Is there something wrong with being a tiny white chick? There is never a need to mention the color of someone’s skin or their size. Not ok.
Right?
I could not agree more! Geez not everything has to be about the color of one’s skin! I am sick of this. It’s 2022 not the 1900’s
Racist much? Disgusting you’d have to say such garbage! I actually agreed with all her points. Keep your nasty opinions to yourself and be nic for a change
Great article with interesting points. I would only disagree with one thing: the silk or lace tank. To me, these tops give off a “see my bra” vibe (especially when styled in such a way to peek out from under a cardigan or blazer), so I’d rather just stick to the basic modest tank which would look much more sophisticated.
Thank you! Agreed. Imagine if someone had something to say about one of the other races or sizes…. Cut the sh*t people.
If you don’t like what this article is saying, MOVE ON!
Detest uggs!! Why do people like them?? I went to Florida and it was HOT and some teens were wearing them…unbelievable!!
At least they’re appropriately named!
I agree. The tank texture is a bit much for me. Reminds me of lingerie. Classic and simple is my style. Color works.
I hate the bra straps showing and a lot of young girls do it! I am older so I wear something cute over my tank! Much cuter and ladylike! Oh and I wish I was a DD! Lol! Love the article! Agree with all except the comment of skin color. I would never say that in a million years!
No you are not the only one. To boot they look ridiculous in 70degree weather! (CA.) they are winter boots!
You certainly are not, they are just UGLY
Flip flops for the garden or beach, pretty flats everywhere else, Ugg’s for winter in and around the home??
I agree with pretty much everything else on the list, especially the platform shoes. I never thought they looked chic.
I just want to say we really should get over these lists, regardless of whether we agree ( I do) or not. Let people be. We can move on to other things in blogging, surely?
All these tips are shown with thin people in mind. What about us plus size women. Just because we are plus size doesn’t mean we’re not interested in style and tips. The dresses that are suggested are body clinging not exactly what plus size women would be comfortable wearing.
Interesting.. food for thought on a few alternative options however not all .
If one is trudging through snow & sleet in freezing cold winter weather ? Nothing better than Ugg’s to keep your feet toasty & warm. Def not in the spring / summer months. I do however agree socks & sandals are a No go! Lol 🙂
I had purchased a pair of UGGS, a few years ago. I thought they were ugly, my friends said they are warm and comfy. Honesty, I put them on..wore them one half a day. I’m a heel gal. But I do wear a warmer, taller boot, medium height also. Tennis shoes are for walking. But it gets cold in Mo..definitely! I’ve had two foot surgeries. I’ve had businesses that heels were more appropriate and professional. Flats make my back hurt, and I will walk right out of them. Lol!!!!
Love uggs fir warmth but they get ruined in the snow- not warerproof
I’m with you on the uggs
What happened to individuality? Or doing what makes you feel good? and showing bra straps is a no no unless it’s dior of course 🙄.
Didn’t you see her very first paragraph? I think she prefaced this post with exactly that sentiment. Why did you bother to read the post? Or, could you be just looking for something to complain about?
Right on Me! I am not trying to impress anyone so I wear what I want and don’t look tacky. If you don’t want your bra to show, go braless. I do when ever possible as long as nothing shows. Lets get off the racist comment. Some people are and some people are not. Lets be the are not and leave it like that.
Hi Carolyn
So I think there are classy platforms. Even the nude colored pumps with the ankle strap in your pic aren’t bad/minus the strap would be good. Some of us are height challenged and need that oomph! Platforms are usually more comfortable than stilettos.
Also, yeah camisoles and being well endowed…..,unless you are wearing something over it like a blazer or sweater,,,,it’s just not viable. The type of strapless bra we blessed girls have to wear just isn’t comfortable! We need to wear a tank top to hide straps. The Itty bitty club can go braless or wear one of those (useless to us) bras.
There’s lots of body types our there, we are all different. Lots of people have problems or health issues and we are all just doing the best we can.
Good information
Classy way to look at any age
Thank you
Really glad you liked the info, Anna 🙂
Great advice! However, I can’t go along with the pics for #2, Swipe out Tank Tops. Yes – switch to lace or satin, but the pics show what looks like a lingerie top. When 1/3 of the look says “underwear” or “sleep wear”, that says cheap. Those should be partially covered or walked out entirely along with the Bandage bodycon dresses. As for the rest – right on!!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Tricia! Wishing you a happy new year!
Love this! Thank you❤️
Thanks for all the suggestions Carolyn. I like classy.
Everyone says the well endowed are more blessed. Why is that a blessing? I know girls who are well endowed that think girls who are not are more blessed for having less!
First off, I have a fear of things around my neck due to being a sexual assault survivor so tanks tops are my top of choice. Flip flops are another must have. Why because I have psoriatic arthritis and the shoes I have allowed me to leave my house when my feet swell. If you think bra straps are tacky, I think boobs hanging out without a bra is beyond tacky, its nasty. Point is, just because you think its tacky isn’t because some one chooses to sometimes its a must!
Hi, Jo Ellen! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I definitely agree that if there is a physical reason or traumatic experience that requires you to wear a specific item then you need to wear what you’re comfortable with and what works for you. Wishing you a great new year!
Thank you for this post. I totally agree with most of your suggestions. (Although I do love wearing flip=flops, I agree that they are not the most supportive or attractive option.) The plain, simple tank tops are more to my liking/style than lacy ones. BTW, I am 65 years old. 🙂
Thank you for sharing, Rose! I definitely agree that you have to dress to your liking and style first. 🙂
I love my Birkenstock slides leather and or the hard rubber material ones!
Choices choices choices! Just because you think you need these items, that doesn’t make them less tacky!
Love your advice. I also do not like the look of Ugg’s. My daughter loves them and has several pairs, as fo me I like a little hill.
Haha well they’re not for everyone (or me), but I do know others that just love them as well!
Cami’s and pretty things to wear under jackets/blazers would be great but when you aren’t lucky enough to be small chested you do whatever you have to do to have the same look. Shelf bra’s don’t work for a majority of large chested women.
What I would give to have smaller breasts!
You definitely got to wear what works for you at the end of the day!
Haha lucky enough to be small chested ? As a B- who’s always looking for something to stuff my bra with I never thought of it as luck it make me stop and think about how were never happy you kinda just made my day girlie thank you
Some stuff is good other not so much. I live in Colorado and love my Uggs in winter. Heels not so much in the snow and my birkenstocks are worn how I want and they don’t look tacky.
I agree that heels wouldn’t work in the snow! At the end of the day, you’ve got to wear what you love. 🙂 Thanks for commenting!
Thank you for your great tips. Love the examples of your do’s and don’t. I am new to your site/ newsletter. Look forward to all the great tips to come.
Happy to hear that, Karen! 🙂
Pointy shoes and heels? Ha! Never! I’ve gotten to my mid 60’s without ruining my feet….I’m not going to start now! My Cole Haan weekender loafers are a comfy and stylish casual shoe for most occasions. If I need to dress up, a low wedge does the job.
Weekender loafers sound really comfy! I love my loafers too.
To me, tacky is defined by clothing and accessories that don’t fit your body properly, are cheap fabrication and material, and/or are not appropriate for where they’re worn. I’m a sales professional for many years, I’d never wear flip flops to a business or company meeting but I sure love my blingy tasteful ones for a night out, etc. Tacky can be avoided by developing a good eye, knowing your body type, being confident and comfortable, and having a friend whose fashion sense you trust.
Those are really good points!
Tired of hearing the degrading expression ” flat chested” and from bosomy women who constantly refer to their cleavage and are obsessed with their breasts. There are all types of beauty.
I agree! I don’t like how society has portrayed that you are only attractive if you have a large chest.
Carolyn, you can style me anytime
Amen to that; we should all show support (no pun intended) and love to each other. If you have breasts, you are not flat chested! Beauty comes in all sizes. And contrary to what society peddles, some men prefer small, firm breasts; besides if you think maturely, you would come to the conclusion that it takes so much more to make an attractive woman.
Judge not and not be judged.
Seriously can we just be women and enjoy, weather your size color shape!
I agree with Carolyn.
She should not be telling women Or men what to wear. And idc what degree or job you have.
We are all different and can make our own decisions. Your size, color, shape and gender is yours and if you like what’s in the mirror then go with it. Because your elegance might be my tacky. Or vise versa. Either way it’s PERSONAL!
So you do you and let me do me!
That’s it. The End.
She did make it sound like it was not a good thing to be a tiny white chick.
Points were made!
These are only suggestions..wear what you want and own it, regardless of your size, race, ethnicity. Those that mind don’t matter, those that matter won’t mind ❤️
I find it hilarious that people cannot simply take the meat and throw away the bones when it comes to this article. As if everything must apply to everyone on earth🙄
I went to private school and had to wear that uniform all year round , but as much I hated it, after Junior high school , my passion to always,. like classy became my style to this day , people would all ways tell me I’m a class girl, I agree everything in this article , you well get lovers or haters ! But you’re always look good .Thankyou. M.B.
And no camel toe showing yoga pants outside the gym…at any size!
Very few bra options when you’ve had a double mastectomy and no reconstruction (therefore wear post op bras for/with prosthetic breasts). How about changing the fashion industry to be less judgey and more understanding of post op needs. Some have very few choices if they want to be comfortable – especially in hot weather.
Ok I don’t care what u wear. I say wear what u want but no camel toe or underwear showing. I would say no yoga pants and totally no pj pants but that’s me. I say wear what makes u happy 😉
Thanks Ems, I TOTALLY agree with everything she said as well. When you have real class, you understand where she’s coming from.
What is camel toe?
Camel toe, or cameltoe, is slang for the outline of labia majora in tightly fitting women’s clothes.
Usually results when stretchy fabric tension in the crotch area outlines both the outer labia and mons pubis in such a way that the shape resembles the forefoot of a camel.
Love all of these suggestions!
Lots of great suggestions, but when did it become chic to wear nylon knee-hi’s with a dress? I definitely missed that memo!
Well, honey, Bless your heart. You must live in LA or New York City… I wear my flop flops 10 months of tge year & the other two, I wear my Uggs. Right now I’m wearing cute little overalls that my kids bought me with a tank top. Im pretty sure you can’t see my bra straps but you never know…I might move & they might pop out. I dress to suit my lifestyle & mood.🥴🤣🥰
Thank you for this article. You are only giving suggestions, not mandates and still, people get all upset. Keep giving good suggestions like these and ignore the complainers.
I like this article and love the ideas, plan to put some of them to use! I like to look nice when I leave the house. Sure, I don’t always wear make-up when I’m going to the grocery, but I still put on a neat pair of pants/shorts and a nice top. I was taught this growing up, to look nice and have respect for yourself. Besides, it makes me feel good about myself when I look nice and like what I’m wearing. I dress to please myself, not to make a statement saying “look at me”, but to be comfortable and feel good about myself.
I enjoy these types of articles. They are suggestions, ideas that we may not have thought of! By all means, be true to yourself and be respectful of opinions that differ from yours.
I agree with the suggestions, however, I like my Uggs, I paid too much money for them to just toss them. I wear them in the winter with jeans for warmth.
I just wanna know one thing Where are those grey boots with the fold over trim from..so cute
I agree with you on those uggs! Would be nice to read about styles for women over 50/60. I still feel young at 62 but some clothes are not for us older adults. Comfort is a necessity i can wear those heals anymore.
No bras showing ever!!!!!!Have a little class. Keep your underwear to yourself.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m not having a good day unless my bra is showing. My husband says my uggs are sexy. But then again, I’m one of those girls that drives a Jeep, goes fishing to relax and chews tobacci. So! It looks like I’m that tacky lady you wrote this article about. You’re welcome!
Pointy toed shoes are hell for your foot health. Why didn’t you show some nice round toed heels, or much lower heels? You don’t have to deform your feet to look put together.
I c add n wear those kind of pointed heel, or walk in them. Hurt my feet
Another thing that needs to go is torn jeans. Older ladies wearing them just scream tacky! Leave these to the youngsters that like to draw attention to themselves. Frayed clothing is not classy in any sense.
This might sound wild but what if we just wear what we want. And let other people wear what they want. And just be cool. Like, if you like something, and you feel good in it, wear it. Is that crazy?
With that being said, with that being said, with that being said, but no really, with that being said
This “article” is so unhealthy.
