Winter traveling may not be everyone’s first vacation choice, I mean who wants to be freezing 24/7 after all? But with the right winter travel outfit to keep warm, you can truly enjoy your new destination! And look chic while doing it.

I’ve been on a couple of snowy trips where I did not pack right the right winter travel outfit and let me tell you, it can almost ruin a trip! How can you get the most out of your vacation when you’re too cold and freezing to walk around and take it all in? Here are some things that I learned and what I would pack differently next time!

1. Pick a long, thick coat in a neutral color

This is the foundation of any winter look. I love hacks on how to look expensive without spending a lot of money, but I’ve learned some things are worth spending extra money on. Wanting something to be thick and warm is a no-brainer, but the exact style is up to you!

Do you want to look even chicer? Go with a long wool coat in a neutral color, like camel. I just love camel coats and would collect them like little bunny figurines if I could.

Want to make a statement? Go with a faux fur coat. These are very eye-catching and surprisingly warm!

Puffer coats can be a good option too, but I think wool coats or peacoats take the cake here when it comes to looking chic. But it’s definitely personal preference!

2. Get boots that are sturdy, yet stylish

It can be harder to find boots where style and functionality meet, but keep looking because you don’t want your boots to be an afterthought!

If you know that you’ll be traveling during snow, I don’t recommend booties. Go with something a little taller to keep those precious ankles protected from slush, snow, and wind.

Also, you’ll want a good waterproof material. Though they make products to help with suede boots, sometimes it’s best to not even have to bother. And we certainly don’t want suede that leaves white water rings when it dries! Not chic.

Overall, you want your feet to be toasty and yet you want to look “downtown ready”…not like you’re about to hit the slopes.

3. Show off your style with a hat

Hats are going to keep you warm, yes, but this is a place where you can show off some style! Whether you choose a print or color, this is an easy way to experiment with style without committing to a full bold look.

Since the rest of your outfit is already pretty warm, why not considering upping the chic factor with a beret that has cute embellishments and designs? Berets aren’t as warm, but they sure are chic.

Pom-pom beanies are cute, but you can never go wrong with something simple either. At the end of the day, it’s personal style preference!

Do you have to invest in a hat? Speaking from my personal experience, I haven’t really noticed a warmth difference from hats that are $15 or $50. I don’t think you have to splurge here, so why not save on your clothing budget or better yet, put the money towards your coats or boots.

4. Gloves

Leather gloves are very classy, sleek, and really polish off a look! Cashmere gloves would feel very luxurious. Just like hats, this can be a fun place to add print and color if you want. Or you can look for details such as sewn-on pearls or a faux fur cuff.

If you want to stay extra warm you could even get the ones with the touch screen fingers so you don’t have to take your gloves off when you’re using your phone!

5. Scarf
There are so many cute options for scarves out there. In order to stay warm, just think big and fluffy! An oversized scarf is a great pick because you can wrap it around as many times as needed- depending on how cold you are.

I also love the idea of doing a fur collar- it will have you looking very cool yet still staying warm. If you’re going to pack a cozy scarf, make sure you are packing cozy clothes too! Traveling during the winter, you’ll want thicker fabrics, so leave the silk/satin items at home.

And you’ll want thick and cozy sweaters, of course! Turtlenecks are also classic and they keep your neck more covered- so that’s a plus.
