So, let’s take a look at some easy ways on how to color mix and create some killer new outfits in the process.

How to Color Mix

Know Your Color Wheel

color wheel

When it comes to skillfully mixing colors, one of the handiest tools is probably something you remember from middle school art class: the color wheel. This diagram shows us the colors we may encounter when getting dressed and, most importantly, how they relate to one another. Certain combinations of colors on this wheel have been proven to be pleasing to the eye, which is exactly what we want when it comes to our outfits!

Now that we know a bit more about the color wheel, let’s take a look at how we can use the color wheel to create great color mixes.

Complementary Colors

You’ve heard the saying that “opposites attract,” right? Well, that couldn’t be more true when it comes to mixing colors. We can often see complementary colors used in media, design, and of course, fashion. Complementary colors lie on the opposite side of the color wheel from each other; for example, orange and blue. The human eye is naturally drawn to symmetry and harmony, so when these colors are paired, they will always go together and “complement” one another.

Analogous Colors

Analogous colors are sort of the opposite of complementary colors; these are going to be hues that lie on either side of any given color on the color wheel. For example, the analogous colors for pinks are reds and purples. Since you have three colors to work with, this color mixing method is perfect for creating an interesting and beautifully cohesive look.

A monochromatic color palette is ideal for anyone looking to create an outfit that’s eye-catching, yet sleek and sophisticated. When looking at our trusty color wheel, you’ll notice the shade variations of each color as you move inward on the wheel. Pick one of these colors and play around with the different shades for a killer monochromatic look.

Stick with One Color “Family”

Have you noticed that colors like baby blue, lavender, mint, and pale pink always look gorgeous when paired together? That’s because they’re all part of the same color family! Colors of the same family usually have a similar saturation and brightness, which makes them easy to mix together for a cohesive look. Other color families include jewel tones, neutrals, and warm and cool colors.

Accent Colors

One of the easiest ways to brighten up a look is by working in a fun accent piece. This method of color mixing works well if you’re looking for something more conservative, as a pop of color looks great when worn with more neutral tones. Go for a bold bag, shoes, or really have some fun with a bright-colored top or pants.

As you can see, color mixing is such an effective way to add flair and personality to your look. If you’re still feeling uncertain about mixing and matching colors on your own, you can also find plenty of great patterned pieces that use these same color mixes. With a little bit of practice, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a color mixing pro!
